Sea Of Shadows Opens The Turks & Caicos International Film Festival

Environmental Focus Panels Announced

The Turks and Caicos International Film Festival (TCIFF) announced today that the Festival weekend will open with the astonishing feature documentary Sea of Shadows, executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio.  The Festival runs 15 – 17 November 2019.
The winner of the Audience Award at The Sundance Film Festival and Oscar favourite, Sea of Shadows is an inspirational thriller, following the work of a group of dedicated scientists, high-tech conservationists, investigative journalists and courageous undercover agents as well as the Mexican Navy in the Sea of Cortez.  When Mexican drug cartels and Chinese traffickers join forces to poach the rare Totoaba Fish, their deadly methods threaten to destroy virtually all marine life in the region, including the most elusive and endangered whale species on Earth, the Vaquita Porpoise.

Ru Mahoney the film’s field producer and Capt Peter Hammarstadt the Operations Director of Sea Shepherd will be at the Festival in support of the film for opening night, which will be at the luxurious Shore Club in their bespoke screening room.

Colin Burrows, Festival Director said;We have a fantastic line up of films, guests and speakers at the festival which is a testament to the importance of the subject.  Our opening night film couldn’t be more fitting and I am delighted to be able to show it to our audience and guests.  The islands have long attracted Hollywood for its vacations and now it’s a real pleasure to welcome film-makers here to our film festival.”

Continuing the Festivals dedication to raising ongoing and escalating issues around the environment and oceans, there will be compelling panel discussions which will include a look at how wildlife films have changed; Jonny Keeling, the executive producer of the BBC Natural History unit who produced Planet Earth and is about to release Seven Worlds, One Planet, the next BBC blockbuster, will be in attendance sharing exclusive “first look” extracts, alongside award winning director Tom Mustill.

Founders of Red Nose Day and Comic Relief, Richard Curtis and Emma Freud will lead a conversation around how to make great content about challenging subjects.

World renowned filmmaker, photographer and conservationist Rob Stewart’s film Sharkwater Extinction will screen at the Festival; Sandra Stewart and Brian Stewart, producers of the film and Rob’s parents will be at the Festival and participate in a Q&A.

There will also be an underwater filmmaking session with the noted cameraman Duncan Brake. Duncan is a highly skilled, well-travelled wildlife and reality cameraman with a passion for ocean conservation and underwater filming. He has worked across the globe from Antarctica to the Bahamas using an array camera system.

Further details of the program will be announced shortly.
